FAST - errors (-top-)
- Login is not on file
Question: When I go to request a connection for a user I get an error message
saying that the
Login is not on File.
Answer: This error message means that the user has not been added to FirstStep.
Refer to "Adding a User to Firstep" in the FirstStep FAST Information Coordinators
Training Manual.
- Failed to launch application
Question: When I log into First Step and try to launch FAST, I get the error failed to launch application, this operation returned because the timeout period expired.
Answer: Have your DSP (Desk Support Person) refer to knowledge tool document 2674 to resolve the error.
- Email not sent after submitting or approving requests
Question: I am now on Active Directory. Why am I not receiving any emails after having submitted or approved a request?
Answer: There is an Active Directory issue with the email install button in Single Sign On (SSO) utilities. To resolve this, ask your DSP or computer support person to change your user login to have temporary admin rights which will allow you to go to SSO Utilities and click on the Email Install button.
- Missing buttons
Question: I logged on to FirstStep today and I can't click on some of my buttons or I logged on to FirstStep today and some of my buttons are gone. What happened?
Answer: Some of the files that connect your PC to FirstStep may have been corrupted. Don't panic, go to the the FirstStep main screen and select the Utilities button. Then select the Delete Syscon.dat button. If you still are having problems, email issecsd@lsyr.edu and explain the situation.
- Illegal operation
Question: I was working in FirstStep when I received an error message saying that I had
performed an illegal operation. I closed out of FirstStep, then tried to log
back in. Things don't seem to be working properly. What do I do?
Answer: Reboot and try again (no I'm not just saying this to make you go away!)
FAST - general (-top-)
- Employee Acknowledgement Form (disclosure form)
Question: Where can I print off the SU Acknowledgement Form that the employee has to sign?
Answer: Click here for the form.
- Department Information Coordinator
Question: Who is my Information Coordinator?
Answer: Here's the listing.
- Master IC Access
Question: What is Master IC Access?
Answer: This access is highly restricted. It allows Information Coordinators to
make
requests for all
users including users outside their department. In most
cases, it
will be temporary. This is an option
in the PROD FAST request. You
will be asked
to explain why this access is needed and how long it
will be needed.
- Login id
Question: My user's FirstStep login is different than his Novell login. How do I change
this?
Answer: Do not change the user's FirstStep login yourself. Contact the
Information Center Help Desk at x2677 and explain the situation. The consultant
will create a request that will be sent to the appropriate ServiceDesk group for
resolution.
FAST - employee (-top-)
- New employee
Question 1: I want to request access in FAST for a new staff member. What is the work flow to establish a new employee?
Answer 1: Click on this link to download and print the document
Question 2: I have a brand new employee who started today and just got her SUID card. When I
go into SSO User - Update to add the user I get an error message saying that the
SUID number has not been assigned. How do I add this user to FirstStep?
Answer 2: FirstStep is updated nightly from HR files. FirstStep will not recognize this user's SUID number until FirstStep has been updated to reflect the prior day's HR business. Add the user the following day.
- Employee's current security access
Question: Is there a report that shows what security access my users have?
Answer: There is the Application Security Access report that all IC's can run. The report will give you the employee's current security access. Here are the instructions to run the report. This report is very useful to the IC in a number of ways:
- Before the employee leaves or transfers from your department, run the report, so you will know what access to request for the new employee.
- The report makes it easier to perform a review of the access for all the people in your department.
- The report is useful to have when troubleshooting an user's access problem.
- Employee transferred/terminated
Question: A user has left SU or is moving from my department to another department on campus. What should I do?
Answer:
- Go to SSO User - Update and lock the user's account with the appropiate reason.
- If this user has connections that are specific to your department (for example MSDS, FAMIS, BSR, PARKING), then submit a FAST request for each connection the user has. Indicate in the requester’s comments field the user’s status. For example, the user has left SU, transferred to another department. Do not fill out the request information field.
- Employee not assigned to department
Question: I have a new user who has transferred to my department from another department on campus. When I go to update her account she is still listed as working in her old department. I am not authorized to update users in this department. What should I do?
Answer:
- If the transfer took place that day hopefully the user's department will be changed in FirstStep the next day.
- If not try to find out the status of the user's iJAN form (whether it has been sent to HR).
- If the change is being delayed for any reason and the user needs access to
FirstStep in order to do her job, you can
request Master IC access (via PROD
FAST request). This access is usually temporary. With Master IC access, you
would be able to submit FAST requests for employees not assigned to your
departments. If you don't have FAST access, then email your request for Master
IC
access to issecsd@syr.edu.
- Information Coordinator retiring
Question: I am the Information Coordinator for my department and will be retiring next month. I have a new employee who will be taking over these responsibilities. How do I request Information Coordinator access for him?
Answer:
- Go to Request Maintenance - Requester and add a request for the user to be given the Prod FAST connection. Fill out the Request Information and make sure to include the department(s) the new Information Coordinator will be responsible for.
- Sign the person up for training
- Access is approved when training is completed. Then the user will have the FirstStep FAST connection
.
- Employee on leave
Question: I have an employee going on leave, but need to have her access to remain available (unlocked).
Answer: Email us with an explanation of the situation. Indicate in the email that this person’s access is to remain unlocked while she’s on leave.
- Information Coordinator's department users FAST access
Question: As the IC for my department, is there a report listing my department users' FAST access?
Answer: Please refer to item 2. in this section.
FAST - requests (-top-)
- Adding request for new departments
Question: I am an IC and am now responsible for submitting requests for another department. What should I do?
Answer: You should submit a Prod FAST request for yourself and indicate the additional departments that you will be the Information Coordinator. Include your manager’s approval.
- Requesting report, Hyperion, folder access
Question: I have a user that needs access to "My Reports" where "My Reports" can include running a department report, running a data warehouse report, or additional web folders.
Answer: Submit the FAST request Prod My Reports, if the user does not have the "My Reports" link or if the user already has the "My Reports" link, but needs access to additional reports/folders. Note: If the user has access to financials, she should already have a "My Reports" link.
- Requesting "non-data warehouse" production data access
Question: I have a user that needs to write Hyperion/Brio queries against production data (not against the data warehouse).
Answer: There are two FAST requests that you should submit.
- Prod My Reports (to get access to Hyperion)
- Prod RESTRICTED access to SA9PROD (to get access to HR, Student data) Or
Prod RESTRICTED access to FIN9PROD (to get access to Financial data).
- Finding the right FAST connection
Question: What FAST connection do I use to submit a request?
Answer: In FirstStep utilities, there is a FAST Keyword Search that allows you to search for the connection. When the search produces a connection or connections, you can get more information on the connection by simply highlighting it which will then display the connection description below in a window.
Note-The original FAST FAQs document by the ITS Staff Training group was used as the basis for the current FAQs page.
