Syracuse University's Information Technology and Services (ITS) has upgraded the AirOrange network to a new authentication and encryption framework called 802.1x. This standards-based technology provides an encrypted connection from a client's wireless computer to AirOrange and eliminates the need for clients to login every time they connect to the wireless network. After the computer is initially configured for 802.1x, subsequent secure authentications to the wireless network will automatically happen.
What this means to you
With the new AirOrangeX (802.1x) technology:
- Students, faculty, and staff will no longer use the University's Nortel VPN client (Windows machines) or the Apani VPN client (Macintosh) to establish a secure connection to AirOrange. The Nortel VPN appliances have been removed from service.
- Students, faculty, and staff should remove the Nortel and Apani VPN software from their computers.
Remote Access Security
ITS has installed a new, remote access security VPN system for those who need to access SU's enterprise data from off-campus locations. Further information is available on the ITS Remote Access Security Web pages.
