All current video-game consoles should connect to the SU network via a wired connection with no trouble.
Game consoles no longer need to be registered manually by ITS.
Other non-Web enabled devices such as:
- Vonage VOIP devices
- TiVo
- Slingbox
will need to be manually registered on the SU network by ITS technicians before they can be used online.
To request that a non-Web enabled device be registered, complete the online
Device Registration Request form.
Students will need to provide ITS technicians with the wired MAC/Ethernet address
for the device.
How to find your Game Console MAC/Ethernet address
Special Note for Wii
| As the Wii only supports wireless out of the box - and online gaming on the SU network is only accessible
through the wired network, students will need to purchase a Wii LAN adapter before they
can get onto the network. The Wii Net Connect is currently available for purchase at the SU Bookstore ($21.99). |
Personal Network Routers
To better accommodate the varied devices students connect to the wired (Ethernet) network in
residence halls (i.e. personal computers, gaming consoles, voice-over-Internet devices, and TiVo),
ITS has approved the use of personal network routers in student rooms (sometimes called "broadband
routers or "cable/DSL routers"). Routers must not have wireless capability (i.e. Apple Airports are
not allowed) because wireless devices disrupt the SU network (wired and wireless). Further information
is available on the router Web page.
ITS does not support the setup or use of game consoles. Students who have problems or questions
regarding the use of game consoles must seek help from the appropriate vendors.
